What IsGreen Hydrogen?

Green hydrogen in India can be produced through renewable-electricity electrolysis or conversion of biomass, including gasification. Under the MNRE standard, it must meet a well-to-gate emissions threshold of no more than 2 kg CO₂e per kg of hydrogen, averaged over 12 months. The production route alone does not make hydrogen green: producers must measure, monitor and verify emissions under the applicable certification scheme.

Current Challenges

Despite its potential, Green Hydrogen adoption faces key challenges today.

    High Cost
    Of Production

Green Hydrogen currently costs significantly more than conventional fuels.

    • High capex for electrolyzers
    • Expensive renewable power
    • High cost of infrastructure
  • Electricity transmission pylons at sunset symbolising grid dependence and renewable intermittency.

    Grid Dependence
    & Renewable Intermittency

Variable renewable generation, storage needs and grid integration can complicate reliable hydrogen production and affect project economics.

    • Variable solar & wind output
    • Storage and grid-integration needs
    • Renewable procurement and matching requirements
  • Coal mining operation with industrial machinery and smokestacks in the background.

    Coal & Fossil
    Fuel Dependency

India’s energy mix is still heavily dependent on coal and imported fossil fuels.

    • High carbon emissions
    • Import dependency
    • Volatile fuel prices

Carbon Mandi is developing a decentralized, biomass-based Green Hydrogen ecosystem, exploring locally sourced feedstocks with the aim of supporting energy security and creating value for farmers.

India’s National Opportunity

India Has Strong FoundationsTo Advance TheGreen Hydrogen Revolution

Carbon Mandi is building a decentralized Farm-to-Fuel ecosystem using Hemp and Napier biomass to support India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Climate Goals 2030.

  • India’s crude-oil import dependence is around 88% of consumption, increasing exposure to global oil-market volatility.

  • At the same time, millions of acres of agricultural land produce biomass that often remains underutilized.

  • What if India’s farms could become India’s future energy fields?

Our Mission: Empower Farmers. Strengthen Rural India. Build Aatmanirbhar Energy. For India. By India.

Why

Hemp & Napier?

One Crop Combination. Multiple Benefits. Endless Possibilities.

Hemp and Napier are being assessed as biomass feedstocks. Agronomic performance, water demand, processing suitability and energy yield must be validated for each location and operating model.

Feedstock Properties Must Be Tested

HEMP

Cellulose Content

Test locally

Strong stems, fast growth and high fiber yield.

NAPIER GRASS

Cellulose Content

Test locally

High biomass yield, perennial and resilient.

  • BIOMASS POTENTIAL

Measure dry-matter yield through location-specific field trials before planning supply.

  • SOIL OUTCOMES

Assess soil health and organic-carbon changes through baseline and follow-up testing.

  • SUPPLY PLANNING

Plan harvest cycles, storage and seasonal inventory to support reliable supply.

  • CO₂

    CARBON ACCOUNTING

Quantify net greenhouse-gas outcomes using a defined baseline and lifecycle boundary.

  • WATER & LAND

Evaluate irrigation demand, local water availability and land suitability before cultivation.

How Does It Work?

Intercropping Model

Carbon Mandi is assessing a proposed hemp–Napier intercropping approach. Crop compatibility and agronomic performance must be tested under local field conditions.

Field of hemp and napier grass intercropped in alternating rows, with HEMP and NAPIER labels above each row.
  • Crop compatibility: Assess crop compatibility, light, water, nutrient use and machinery access.

  • Soil Protection: Measure soil cover, erosion and moisture outcomes under local conditions.

  • Nutrient Synergy: Test soil structure and fertility rather than assuming a universal benefit.

  • Pest & Weed Management: Monitor pest and weed pressure under the selected intercropping system.

  • Harvest planning: Confirm local harvest cycles and coordinate storage to manage seasonal supply.
